Conference "Start a change" at the eighth international film festival of people with disabilities - BOSIFEST, attracted a large number of experts, but also students and young people. On the last day of the conference, they spoke about the application and importance of the media in inclusive education, but also about culture, tolerance and diversity.
Marina Neđić from the Library of the City of Belgrade presented the projects and actions that this institution has undertaken in the form of inclusion of persons with disabilities, with particular attention paid to children. For example, puppet shows for children with disabilities are performed in the Old Town Library as well. She explained that there is increasing number of electronically accessible content in libraries throughout Belgrade and throughout Serbia, as digital and virtual libraries are especially important for the blind and visually impaired.
- Money is essential for equipping libraries, but understanding people with disabilities is much more important. Many children's workshops can be organized without additional resources, and the only important thing is that employees understand the need for such actions. Social integration of people with disabilities is best achieved through cultural institutions - said Nedić.
Vesna Radovanović from the Faculty of Rehabilitation and Education presented assistive technologies in creating accessibility of cultural contents for deaf and hard of hearing people. She said that in Serbia, unfortunately, only the Youth Center has an induction loop that gives people with hearing aids cleaner sound, although the possession of this appliance has long become the standard for most of the hall and public cultural spaces in Europe.
- There is nothing better in the region. Only Zagreb is leading a significant number of induction loops that allow people with hearing aids unhindered tracking of concerts, theater performances or film projections. During the research, it was found that many of the institutions in Serbia were willing to introduce an induction loop, but simply did not even know about the existence of this system until now - said Radovanovic.
Master defectologist Ivana Kostić presented the results of the research on the ability to recognize emotions among students who are disturbed in development. In the discussion after her presentation, it was concluded that similar research should be carried out on children of pre-school age.
Tijana Femić from the Novi Sad School of Journalism presented a survey on the public service of Radio Television of Serbia and Radio Television of Vojvodina for a period of two months in the central informative program Dnevnik, only one of the issues on the difficulties encountered by persons with disabilities was seen. At that time, only one subscription had a subtitle in the RTS that helped deaf and hard of hearing people to get information, and tragically, it was an attachment to the obligation to pay a TV subscription. She also stated that the translation of sign language for deaf people is regularly used during election campaigns, which is proof that politics continues to dictate many trends in media coverage and reporting on the inclusion of persons with disabilities.
- We successfully organize projects "Day in your shoes" for years. It is a project in which a journalist finds himself in the role of a person with a disability for one day. For example, a journalist gets a job to go to the market and buy certain foods, but to do it without speaking, or should go to a specific address without using sight.
The Conference "Start a Change" was accredited by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Labor, which means that it was also part of the training of professionals working in education and social services. This year, for the first time an expert conference was organized at BOSIFEST, and this practice will continue in the following years.
At this year's BOSIFEST, 18 films selected by selector Goran Radovanovic are displayed, and the jury was selected the best, by Radoslav Zelenovic, director of the European Film Festival Palić, Predrag Gaga Antonijević, celebrated director and Anica Dobra, famous Serbian actress. Gran prix, at the festival this year, won the "Arise and Walk" by Matthieu Firmin.
